5 Of The Best UK Equine Photographers

//5 Of The Best UK Equine Photographers

Honesty to me is a vital part of everything I do in business. If I can’t be honest either with myself or my fabulous clients, current or potential, then I really don’t believe that I should be doing what I do.

As such there are times when I’m speaking to potential clients for the first time that I realise that maybe I’m not the right photographer for them. This could be based on my availability, my style, my pricing, possibly the location (even though I travel) or a combination. In circumstances like this I will quite happily discuss with the client alternative equine photographers who may well be a better fit for them.

Some might think that this is a form of business suicide. I don’t. I feel it is my duty to be open with them in this way.  I also think this actually continues to build relationships and also ensures that the client still walks away with a good feeling from me, even to the degree they will still recommend me to others even though I wasn’t right for them on that occasion.  Ultimately though, they still get the service, package and images that they will be happy with, it’s just not from me.   I believe this way of thinking is also good for the industry and develops a good relationship between fellow equine photographers.

Sadly there are photographers who don’t share this opinion or ethic and will merrily shoot anyone and everyone despite not being a great ‘fit’ for that client.  This can leave clients with a bad experience of photographers and photography, with images they might not like and a pocket that feels like its been taken advantage of.

In turn, this leaves the rest of us a little exposed (pardon the pun) to pick up flack.

So in this blog I’m going to offer some of my favourite UK based equine portrait photographers. Each of these 5 (and there are many more I could have listed) all offer great customer service, beautiful images and often a very distinctive style.  They are also geographically different from one another too, however most (if not all) do travel far and wide!

Please do check them out, give them a follow on their social media platforms if you do like what they do…. they’d definitely appreciate it.

Classic & Vibrant images from Helen Rigby Photography

First on my list is Helen Rigby Photography.   Helen is based in Kent and has being creating beautiful and vibrant images for many years now and its very clear from her images that she’s extremely consistent in her work, plenty of wonderful images of very happy and relaxed clients and their horses. Helen is what I would define as your classic portrait photographer.  Helen is also available for weddings. Whilst I don’t personally know Helen (although we have spoken in the past) I have always heard great feedback towards the service she provides.  Her clients love what she does and how they make her feel.  Her availability is often limited though as she balances her time between her photography genres and her own horse, so get in quick if Helen is your choice.

Matthew Bishop – All The Pretty Horses

Based in the edge of Herts and Bucks you’ll find Matthew Bishop, who operates All The Pretty Horses. Matthew’s style blends contemporary with fine art and for me it produces a very soft and often a romantic style to his images.  Matthew is another who also offers wedding photography and whilst much of his more recent work has focused in this genre he still offers equine photography on request.

Studio Lit Fine Art from Katie Mortimore Photography

Next I’d love to tell you about Katie Mortimore Photography. As an active competitor and long time media accredited equestrian event photographer, Katie has a great knowledge of working alongside horses.   Now offering portrait sessions in and around the Wiltshire/Hampshire areas, Katie creates some very atmospheric images, either with natural light or with some incredible studio lighting that she takes on location. These studio portraits are truly wonderful, so if you want something really different then this could be your route! Multi talented Katie also offers wedding photography, so if you are in that happy place in life where you are in need of a wedding photographer – maybe you even have your horse included in plans for your special day – then do contact Katie to discover more.

Sophie Callahan Photography

A UK list just simply wouldn’t be right without Sophie Callahan Photography! Sophie is probably one of the most established equine portrait photographers out there really. She’s someone that I’ve admired for a long time.  We both came into portrait work via equine event/show work, but Sophie did this a good decade ago really when equine photography of this form was barely unheard off.  As such she’s really had the time to hone her skill and develop all aspects of her business. As a result she has often led the way in this area and is the benchmark for many. Sophie is also a fabulous equine & country Vlogger and blogger (go find them today…) which makes her hugely personable too, which to me is an vital aspect of choosing a photographer!   I’m sure you’ll love her use of natural light and editing style that delivers a timeless and atmospheric look.

Equine group sessions with Ciara Doone Rush

Finally I would recommend Ciara Doone Rush who is based in the North West of England on Merseyside. Ciara specialises in equine and wedding work, she loves the difference and similarities between these two areas of photography and offers some great packages for group or family sessions.  She’s a great story teller through her images and really catches the eye.  If you’re looking for someone more geographically placed to the North West of our wonderful British Isles, then I really recommend looking Ciara up.

So hopefully with just these 5 examples you can see that across the UK we have a wealth of wonderful photographers. Each have different styles to offer and each creating fabulous images that catch your eye.  There’s plenty more too so there will always someone that suits your style and, of course, your budget too.  If you need help in working out just who might be the best fit for you overall then why not have a read of an earlier blog of mine  How to choose your equine photographer.

Have a fabulous week!
